This event will explore the impact of the upcoming European elections on the UK, and what the results might mean for British politics following the invocation of Article 50.
On 29 March the UK invoked Article 50 and begun the process of leaving the EU. But as both sides take their seats at the negotiating table what will the political situation around them look like?
With shock victories for Donald Trump and Brexit in 2016, and the performance of the Front National in the current French election, established political orthodoxies are looking increasingly fragile.
Elections are due this year in France, Serbia, Czech Republic, Norway and Germany, and while Geert Wilders' PVV failed to become the biggest party in the recent Dutch election it is by no means certain that the 'populist wave' of 2016 has finally been brought to a halt.
At this Under-35's Forum event a RUSI panel will examine the political trends in Europe and discuss what this means for the UK in 2017.
Speakers will include:
- His Excellency Mr Simon Smits, Dutch Ambassador to the UK
- Dr Jonathan Eyal, Associate Director, RUSI
- Sophia Besch, Research Fellow, Centre for European Reform
This event is for U-35 Members. If you are not an U-35 RUSI Member, but would like to attend this event, please email Lieke Bos at LiekeB@rusi.org
