NATO Strategy in the Black Sea

calendarclock - (GMT)

While Western strategists have fretted over Russia’s revanchism in Ukraine and uncertainties over Russian designs on the Baltic states, less attention has been paid to the Black Sea, a region of significant strategic interest. Under President Putin, Russia has embarked on a campaign to cement its influence in the region, through conventional military buildup, infrastructure investment, and energy and economic dominance. By solidifying the Black Sea as Russia’s mare nostrum, it creates the potential for a springboard of power projection into the Balkans, and the Mediterranean Sea.
NATO and the Black Sea is a seminar hosted by the Royal United Services Institute to address the challenges concerning the region. It will draw on a wide range of academic experts, policymakers and security and diplomatic practitioners to engage in a candid discussion on how the alliance addresses the geopolitical, energy and military dynamics of the Black Sea basin, and the residual effects on European security.
