Implementing North Korea Sanctions in Practice (with C4ADS)

calendarclock - (GMT)

Managing North Korean sanctions risk has become significantly more complex in recent years, especially in the maritime space. Despite international sanctions requirements seeking to prevent illegal DPRK-linked activity, between January and May 2018 North Korea conducted at least 89 ship-to-ship transfers at sea of illicit and sanctioned commodities, and North Korean-operated vessels continued to transport illicit goods.

This event will explore how governments and the private sector, including insurers, banks and shipping companies, can better implement maritime sanctions requirements against North Korea, including going beyond sanctions lists to conduct far more robust due diligence. It will open with two policy presentations, one led by RUSI and one by C4ADS (featuring a demonstration on methodologies for tracking sanctions evasion in the shipping industry). They will then be followed by a panel discussion with RUSI, C4ADS, and relevant representatives of industry and policymaker communities. Speakers will be announced shortly.

C4ADS is a nonprofit organization dedicated to providing data-driven analysis and evidence-based reporting on global conflict and transnational security issues.
