The annual John Garnett Memorial Lecture honours the legacy of Professor John Garnett as the first academic in the field of Strategic Studies worldwide. Professor Garnett pioneered Strategic Studies as an academic field at the University of Aberystwyth, the first UK institution to offer it as an undergraduate and postgraduate course. Professor Garnett’s expertise was also much in demand outside the academic community, and he was an academic consultant at the Joint Services Defence College, a member of the Council of the Royal United Services Institute, a member of the Foreign Office Advisory Panel on Arms Control and the British Representative on the United Nations Advisory Board on Disarmament.
General Keith Alexander, USA (Ret.) is a four-star general with an impressive 40-year military career, culminating in role of the Director of the National Security Agency (NSA) and Chief of the Central Security Service (CSS) from 2005- 2014. He holds the distinction of serving in this role longer than any other director. While serving as the NSA Director, he was appointed by Congress to be the first Commander to lead the U.S. Cyber Command (USCYBERCOM).
