BY INVITATION ONLY: Countering Terrorism & Violent Extremism, Building Peace: risks, contradictions & how to manage them

calendarclock - (GMT)

The political pressure to respond effectively to conflict and terrorist attacks, at home and abroad, is intensifying. This roundtable aims to provide a non-partisan space for continuing the conversation, drawing on insights from Saferworld, RUSI and other expert participants, including lessons from recent research in Kenya and Tunisia.

It will bring together experts, policy-makers and practitioners from the UK peace, development and security communities to debate how the UK can best respond to global terror threats while promoting international peace and stability.

Chaired by:

  • Mary Harper, Africa Editor, BBC World Service

  • Dr Andrew GlazzardDirector, National Security and Resilience, RUSI
  • Larry Attree, Head of Policy, Saferworld
  • Thomas Nyagah, Saferworld, Kenya research report author

Saferworld’s research has focused on current counter-terrorism, countering violent extremism and stabilisation approaches, and examines strategic and practical options for improving them, outlined in the think piece ‘Should YOU be Countering Violent Extremism?’. Our latest work looks at counter-terror and CVE efforts in Tunisia and two counties in Kenya – Lamu and Garissa, building on previous case studies from Afghanistan, Somalia and Yemen, as well as drawing on lessons from our peace and security programming around the world. For more information on Saferworld’s work please contact Shelagh Daley, Advocacy Manager, Saferworld –

RUSI’s work on terrorism and violent extremism includes the EU’s first external intervention to prevent violent extremism (PVE), research into lone-actor terrorism, and primary research on PVE interventions across Africa and Asia. RUSI’s contribution to the Prevention Project, a major study of the contribution of communities and civil society to PVE, includes the recent thinkpiece: ‘Is It All Over For CVE?’.
