Sheelagh Stewart, Head of the UK Government's Stabilisation Unit (SU), will discuss the SU's recent experiences of facilitating integration in a constrained environment within fragile and conflict affected states.
Sheelagh Stewart has served as Head of the UK Government's tri-departmental Stabilisation Unit since January 2010. The Unit supports fragile states and countries emerging from conflict, and works to enhance their capacity for self-governance. She was formerly Deputy Director, South Asia for the Department for International Development (DfID) and has held various senior roles at DfID including Head of Profession for Governance and Conflict, Senior Programme Manager of Human Development and Senior Governance Adviser. These roles have provided her with in-depth knowledge of Afghanistan and Pakistan as well as extensive stabilisation and conflict experience. Before joining DfID, Sheelagh worked as an independent Governance and Human Rights Consultant, a Senior Research Officer at the Institute of Development Studies and as Chief Executive of the Musasa Project, a human rights organisation in Zimbabwe.
