Handling, Understanding and Fusion in Intelligence

calendarclock - (GMT)

VAdm Al Richards-UA lecture by Vice Admiral Al Richards CB, Chief of Defence Intelligence (CDI), Ministry of Defence, UK.

The realities of the contemporary operating environment mean that it is no longer enough for military understanding to focus on adversaries and their capabilities in isolation. Modern operations demand an understanding of the complexities and interactions of cognitive influences on the motivations, perceptions and fears of all actors in the operating environment.

In his lecture, Vice Admiral Richards will look at the importance of facilitating this level of understanding, requiring the most effective means of information handling and processing. He will also discuss how Defence Intelligence is developing to meet the requirements of this level of strategic understanding.

Vice Admiral Al Richards CB joined the Royal Navy in 1977 and came to specialise in both aviation and surface warfare. As a helicopter pilot he served with 826 Naval Air Squadron, flying primarily in the Falkland Islands, 810 Naval Air Squadron as the Helicopter Warfare Instructor and 814 Naval Air Squadron as the Senior Pilot. As a Principal Warfare Officer (Underwater), he became a towed array specialist, later serving as Operations Officer of HMS DANAE. He has commanded two frigates, HM Ships MONMOUTH and CUMBERLAND, and was the first Commander UK Carrier Strike Group. His naval service has been punctuated by attendance at the Joint Services Defence College and an unprecedented number of appointments within the Central Staff of the Ministry of Defence, covering strategy, plans and policy within UK and Allied arenas, complementing an operational background.  He became Chief of Defence Intelligence in January 2012 and is also responsible for offensive and defensive cyber operations, as well as being the Defence Authority for C4ISR.

An optional £10 sandwich lunch shall be available from 1215.
