Norweigen Embassy LogoThe Royal United Services Institute (RUSI) and the Royal Norwegian Embassy will be co-hosting a seminar to discuss geopolitics in the Arctic with two renowned Norwegian experts on the region, Professor Olav Schram Stokke and Andreas Østhagen. The meeting will be moderated by Dr Jonathan Eyal, International Director at RUSI.

Rapid signs of climate change and changes in the geopolitical environment have brought the Arctic to the forefront of international political debate. As the region becomes increasingly navigable and interested powers increase their presence in the region, it is clear that challenges to the established order will increase. This event will discuss how to approach challenges in the Arctic in the current international environment, based on the conclusions from a five-year research project led by the Norwegian Institute for Defence Studies (IFS).

Professor Olav Schram Stokke is Professor of Political Science at the University of Oslo and a Research Professor at the Fridtjof Nansen Institute (FNI). His area of expertise is international relations with special emphasis on institutional analysis, resource and environmental management, and regional cooperation. Among his recent books are Disaggregating International Regimes: A New Approach to Evaluation and Comparison (MIT Press, 2012) and International Cooperation and Arctic Governance (Routledge, pb. 2010, Chinese version by Ocean Press of China 2014).

Andreas Østhagen works as a Research Fellow for the Norwegian Institute for Defence Studies (IFS) in Oslo and coordinates the program, “Security and Defence in Northern Europe”. He conducts research on Arctic security and maritime issues, while additionally managing Norway affairs for The Arctic Institute, a network-based think tank for Arctic professionals. He has a particular focus on the interests of the coastal states as the Arctic develops, with an emphasis on security and international affairs.
