The Future German Army – Rationale and Vision

calendarclock - (GMT)

RUSI welcomes Lieutenant General Werner Freers, Chief of Staff, German Army, to the Institute where he will give a briefing addressing the issues surrounding the future German Army.

Proposed reforms to the size and structure of the German Army will be among the most far-reaching changes by any member of NATO since the end of the Cold War. The reforms are aimed at professionalising the Bundeswehr and developing its expeditionary capacities, at the same time as reducing the number of personnel and making savings. There are parallels and potential lessons for the British Army – and other international land forces – as it goes through similar changes.
