Douglas Haig Fellowship Lecture - ‘Micky’ Ryan: Haig’s Medical Officer
A lecture by Professor Eugene P Ryan PhD (Cantab), Professor of Mathematics, University of Bath, commemorating the life of Field Marshal Earl Haig of Bemersyde and the forces he commanded.
Colonel Eugene 'Micky' Ryan was a Royal Army Medical Corps officer whose long association with the 1st Earl Haig began in 1912. In August 1914, 'Micky' Ryan crossed to France with Haig and returned with him to England in April 1919. The occasion of their final meeting was a visit to Bemersyde in December 1927, shortly before the Field Marshal's death.
In his lecture, Professor Ryan will informally and anecdotally chart the friendship of Haig and his medical officer. Drawing on the papers of his grandfather, he will focus on accounts of events in World War One, juxtaposed with personal vignettes and glimpses of Haig behind his austere facade.
Professor Eugene P Ryan PhD (Cantab) is Professor of Mathematics at the University of Bath. Prior to his current appointment, he has held positions at the University of Warwick and the University of California, Berkeley. He has published widely in the area of mathematical systems and control theory. As 'Micky' Ryan's grandson, he has also been engaged for some years in collating and editing his grandfather's diaries, letters and other papers, with particular emphasis on their connection with Douglas Haig.
