Deadly Dilemmas: Problems of Counter-insurgency in Documentary Films

A Murderous Decision The RUSI Journal in conjunction with the Conflict, War and Culture programme is pleased to host a public screening of Eine mörderische Entscheidung (A Murderous Decision, dir. Raymond Ley, 2013) followed by a panel discussion featuring Professor Beatrice Heuser, Chair in International Relations at the University of Reading and Sean Langan, Journalist and Documentary Film-maker.

Counter-insurgency and counter-terrorism operations raise difficult dilemmas for politicians and military-decision makers: documentaries and films can sometimes offer new and unexpected ways of looking at these problems. Eine mörderische Entscheidung is a German-French co-production that looks back at the decision to bomb what would later be revealed to be over one hundred Afghan civilians in 2009, acutely illustrating the difficulties of conducting counter-insurgency operations from the perspective of commanders in theatre. Please refer to the accompanying flyer for further information and you can read an analysis of the film in the December 2013 edition of the RUSI Journal:

Pre-screening drinks will be served from 1745 and the screening will begin in the RUSI Library of Military History at 1815, lasting 90 minutes. The screening will be followed by a panel discussion of the key questions of counter-insurgency and counter-terrorism, as well as the challenges faced by filmmakers in tackling these subjects.

Registration is £6 in advance and whilst places are limited, a number of tickets will be available at the door, priced at £7.50 (exact cash only).
