Organised with the

UN Association, Westminster

This is the second conference to mark the International Day of United Nations Peacekeepers. We believe this will be the premier public-access event in the UK to mark this recently-designated UN International Day.

What do we learn in Peace Support Operations (PSO) and what do we share? Some claim it to be endemic in the military psyche to withhold information, even from allies, even when alongside another peacekeeping contingent? The development of trust and understanding in the UK’s Military/NGO Contact Group and the creation this year of our first Post-Conflict Reconstruction Unit demands that lessons learned do become lessons shared. But with whom - and do we speak the same language as they do? We examine these issues.

Since 1964, Wilkinson Sword Limited has presented annually Swords of Peace to units in each of the three Armed Services which have made the most valuable contribution towards establishing good and friendly relations with a community, whether at home or overseas. Since 1994, Joint Service units have qualified for a Special Award. This will be the first time that all award winners have shared a platform in reporting their activity.

We will take this opportunity to lay wreaths at the Cenotaph in memory of UN peacekeepers and civilians who have given their lives in the cause of peace. Join us. If you bring your own wreath, ensure it contains no metal. This can stain the Cenotaph stone.

A full list of confirmed speakers to date can be downloaded in the attachment.

The all-day conference fee is £23.50 (£20 +VAT).
