Now in its seventh year, the UK Project on Nuclear Issues (UK PONI) Annual Conference is the premier national forum for the nuclear policy community to consider salient issues in the field and promote the emergence of a new generation of expertise in academia, industry, government, and the military.
The 2017 Annual Conference will gather established and emerging experts from academia, industry, government and the military to share insights and debate a broad range of civil and military nuclear topics, including the future of US nuclear weapons policy, the role of new technologies and potential crises in South Asia. The conference prioritises affording younger presenters the opportunity to showcase their own research and exchange ideas with prominent experts.
The agenda comprises panel presentations submitted by emerging experts, high-level keynote speakers, and a conference dinner.

Over the past year there has been an increase in the pace of the North Korean nuclear and missile programmes and apparent determination to develop an ICBM. As these programmes press ahead, and the new US administration looks to implement a new policy towards North Korea, this year the conference will consider the motion ‘this House believes it is possible to maintain a stable deterrence relationship with a North Korea that possesses a nuclear ICBM’.
