A lecture by Vernon Coaker MP, Shadow Secretary of State for Defence.
With the end of combat operations in Afghanistan, Britain’s defence and security is entering a new phase. The reconfiguration of the Armed Forces, the planned Strategic Defence and Security Review and sweeping changes to defence procurement will leave a large in-tray for the Defence Secretary after the next General Election in 2015. In his lecture, Vernon Coaker will give his views on recent developments and current issues, and outline his and Labour’s vision for the future of Britain’s defence and security.
Vernon Coaker MP is the Shadow Secretary of State for Defence. He was appointed in October 2013, having previously served as the Shadow Secretary of State for Northern Ireland. He has been the Labour Member of Parliament for Gedling in Nottinghamshire since 1997. In the last Labour government he held several Ministerial positions, including Minister of State in the Home Office with responsibility for Policing, and as a Minister in the Department for Children, Schools and Families. Before entering Parliament, he was a teacher for over twenty years, with his last post being a Deputy Head Teacher of a large comprehensive school.
Refreshments will be served from 1030.
