Major General Res Danny RothschildA lecture by Major General (Res) Danny Rothschild, Director of the Institute for Policy and Strategy at the Interdisciplinary Center, Herzliya, Israel.

The Middle East is currently witnessing an unprecedented shift in the balance of power, amid domestic turmoil and regional insecurity. The situation on the ground is further complicated by the entangled nature of the major strategic challenges of the Middle East, including Iranian-led radical forces, socio-economic and political under-development and the Arab-Israel peace process.

The timing of this transformation in the Middle East is particularly critical as the United States and Europe are experiencing their worst economic crises in more than 70 years. Consequently, as the US and Europe become more introverted, the broad Middle Eastern perception of Western declining power considerably harms the strategic posture of Israel and other countries in the region. Simultaneously, this perception bolsters and reinforces Iran's regional hegemonic ambitions and expansionism. As Western responses to events in the region have been piecemeal, time has come for a more coherent and integrative approach.

In his lecture, Major General Rothschild will assess the strategic implications of current developments in the Middle East, the inter-related character of regional challenges and the way ahead.

Major General (Res) Danny Rothschild is Director of the Institute for Policy and Strategy at the Interdisciplinary Center, Herzliya, and Chairman of the Annual Herzliya Conference on the Balance of Israel’s National Security. His distinguished military career was spent in the Intelligence Corps, and he served as Assistant to the Israel Defense Forces (IDF) Chief of Staff and as Commander of IDF Units in Southern Lebanon. Major General Rothschild was Co-ordinator of Government Activities in the Territories and played a central role in negotiating the peace agreement with Jordan.

Refreshments will be served from 1030.
