UK PONI: The North Korea Nuclear Challenge
North Korea's nuclear and missile programme has dominated global headlines for the past year: from the first intercontinental ballistic missile (ICBM) tests and a likely thermonuclear test, to inflammatory exchanges of rhetoric with the United States.
But how did we get here? With sanctions, diplomacy and military action all discussed as possible responses, what is the best way forward?
This UK PONI panel event will discuss both the political and technical developments to help understand the current crisis and how the international community can respond to the challenge.
- Shea Cotton, Shea Cotton is a researcher at the James Martin Center for Nonproliferation Studies at the Middlebury Institute of International Studies at Monterey. Shea researches North Korea's missile testing activity to understand the evolving strategic doctrine of North Korea and maintains the North Korea Missile Test Database, which tracks North Korea's missile tests.
- Ellie Ross, Eleanor Ross is a freelance journalist, and ex-Asia staff writer at Newsweek. She has written extensively about East and South Asian security, and the U.S/China relations within the region.
- Adam Cathcart, Adam Cathcart is a lecturer in Chinese history at the University of Leeds, with research interests in the Korean War, Sino-North Korean relations and borderlands, and North Korean propaganda and leadership. He is the editor of both Change and Continuity in North Korean Politics (Routledge 2016) and the European Journal of Korean Studies.
The event will be followed by a wine reception.
