Logistics and Total Defence: How Successful was Trident Juncture 2018?
The Norwegian armed forces, which were responsible for planning all logistics and total defence and has just finished their evaluation of the exercise, will present the results of the evaluation in this invitation-only event.
Trident Juncture 2018, NATO’s largest exercise in a quarter-century involving around 50,000 soldiers, 10,000 vehicles, 250 aircraft and 65 vessels, was an enormous logistical undertaking. In addition to the service personnel and their equipment, the exercise’s logistics – which took place in Norway and off the country’s coast, as well as Scandinavian airspace – involved numerous private companies such as lorry companies and food distributors. Adding to the exercise’s complexity, Russia interfered through GPS jamming and other high-tech means. All logistics and total defence planning (involving the crucial aspect of psychological defence) was planned by the Norwegian government.
Trident Juncture took place between October and November 2018. Since then, the Norwegian Armed Forces and the Norwegian Directorate for Civil Protection have been conducting a complete evaluation of the exercise. This evaluation has just been completed. In this RUSI Modern Deterrence executive briefing, Rear Admiral Sverre Engeness and Colonel Eystein Kvarving will present the results of the evaluation, especially in the two key areas of logistics/total defence and strategic communications.
Rear Admiral Sverre Nordahl Engeness of the Royal Norwegian Navy is head of operations at the Norwegian Joint Headquarters. He has previously served as Commander of the Norwegian Coast Guard, Commander of Cyber Services and Operations, and also Commander of the Norwegian Submarine Forces.
Colonel Eystein Kvarving of the Royal Norwegian Air Force is chief of public affairs at the Norwegian Joint Headquarters. He has a previously served as the Royal Norwegian Air Force’s head of communications and chief spokesman for Norway’s Chief of Defence.
