A conversation with General John Allen, Lieutenant General Ben Hodges and Professor Julian Lindley-French, to launch their latest book entitled ‘Future War and the Defence of Europe’.

Europeans should be under no illusion: unless they do far more for their own defence, and do this very differently, all that they now take for granted could be lost in the maze of hybrid war, cyber war, and hyper war. Laying out in forensic detail the scale of the challenge Europeans and their allies face if Europe’s peace and security is to be upheld in a transformative century, this book examines the fundamental dilemmas at the heart of European defence.

In this webinar, the panellists will challenge foundational assumptions about how Europe’s defence is organised and discuss the role of a fast-changing transatlantic relationship, NATO, the EU, and their constituent states. They will provide a radical vision of a technology-enabling future European defence, built around a new kind of Atlantic Alliance, an innovative strategic public-private partnership, and the future hyper-electronic European force, E-Force, it must spawn.

General John Allen is a Distinguished Fellow of RUSI and President of the Brookings Institution. He was previously Commander of the NATO International Security Assistance Force and U.S. Forces in Afghanistan from 2011 to 2013.

Lieutenant General Ben Hodges is a Distinguished Fellow of RUSI and holds the Pershing Chair in Strategic Studies at the Center for European Policy Analysis. He was previously Commander of the United States Army Europe from 2014 to 2017.

Professor Dr Julian Lindley-French is a Senior Fellow at the Institute of Statecraft and Founder and Chair of The Alphen Group. He is author of a number of books.

The webinar will be chaired by Dame Mariot Leslie, RUSI Advisory Board member and former Permanent Representative to the United Kingdom’s Delegation to NATO.

Future War and the Defence of Europe’ by General John Allen, Lieutenant General Ben Hodges and Dr Julian Lindley-French is published on 25 March 2021 by Oxford University Press.
