UK Defence Review and the Future of Defence Policy

The Royal United Services Institute has influenced the future direction of Britain's defence ever since its establishment in 1831.

We are just as engaged in this mission today, at a time when Britain faces fundamental choices in organising its armed forces and military strategy than ever before. This is a generational moment for UK defence policy.

RUSI's Future Defence Review series of reports has become central to this debate, preparing the ground for a comprehensive government review in the near future.

More broadly, our Military Sciences programmes are exploring in detail the operations and capabilities that will redefine Britain's armed forces in the years to come.

Specifically, RUSI's International Security programmes examine the context of Britain's strategy in the world. Our National Security and Resilience programmes explore the alignments between counter-terrorism strategies and defence policy.

Throughout, RUSI's events, lectures and conferences aim to engage the next generation of officers, scholars and leaders in the debate on Britain's defence - and to encourage action at the highest levels of government.

In advance of a future review of defence, RUSI identifies the important areas of defence policy that must be addressed in light of the changing character of twenty-first century warfare, military utility, and reduced government spending in the future.
