RUSI’s research profile and position within a number of global networks, including other institutions, universities and military organisations, enable the Institute to collaborate on numerous research initiatives affecting the international policy agenda.
Af-Pak strategies RUSI is engaged across its programmes and initiatives in examining the wars in Afghanistan and Pakistan - and what they entail for Britain's security.

International Security Studies RUSI's International Security Studies department monitors security and foreign policy developments in countries and regions throughout the world.
Military Sciences The Military Sciences department tackles the question 'what is military?' in the current complicated security environment.
National Security and Resilience The National Security and Resilience Department studies the prevention of, response to, and recovery from potential and actual man-made and natural emergencies and disasters
European Security This programme explores the strategic choices and realities faced by Britain and its partners in Europe and neighbouring regions.
Middle East and North Africa This programme explores security and stability in a diverse and complex part of the world.
Maritime Studies This programme explores the range of issues relating to the national defence and security requirements on the use of the sea for military purposes, and examines how policy shapes military strategy in the maritime environment.
Africa This programme examines a region that is fast becoming a global feature in the defence and security landscape.
Air Power and Technology This programme examines air and space operations for defence and national security.
Alternative Energy and Sustainability Project This project highlights the financial and environmental drivers for alternative energy and sustainability in the military.
Asia This programme explores the future of peace and security throughout the world's largest and most populous continent.
China At a time of shifting global power, RUSI is one of the few Western institutes to have established a working dialogue with China's national security establishment.

Conflict, War and Culture RUSI’s new initiative will investigate the complex and evolving issues surrounding the interpretation and depiction of conflict across various cultural media.
Cyber Space and Cyber Security Cyberspace underpins our critical national infrastructure and the UK economy more broadly. RUSI's programmes critically examine international attitudes to the cyber domain and to cyber security.
Defence, Industries and Society This major study aims to facilitate an evidence-based understanding of the place of industries in Western defence and wider society. The programme will deploy RUSI's authoritative research base to produce independent studies in this area.
Emergency Management This project highlights the range of themes that affect community resilience, as well as the multi-agency co-operation and resilient communications needed to respond to emergencies.
Environmental Change and Security RUSI's Climate Change and Security programme analyses the new security risks posed by environmental issues.

EuropeEuropean Futures European Futures is an independent programme of research and dialogue, offering an open approach to considering the strategic challenges facing the European project. It asks questions about the direction of the Union, its role in the world and its citizens’ place within it; what structures will best serve its constituent members; and what chance exists for radical institutional reform?

EnvironmentFood, Energy and Water Security This project analyses the implications for global security of increasing stress on food, energy and water resources.
