This programme examines the military capabilities afforded by emerging technologies and focuses specifically on Command & Control, Computers, Communication, Intelligence, Surveillance, Target Acquisition and Reconnaissance (C4ISTAR) technologies and Network-Enabled Operations.
Programme Focus
The Military Technology and Information Studies Programme is designed to provide:
- Analysis of new technologies and their application to military forces
- UK Research and Development and implications of the Defence Technology Strategy and the follow on Defence Technology Plan
- Adoption and ethics of new technologies
- Development, concepts and doctrine
It focuses primarily on the UK's Network-Enabled Capabilities, in particular:
- Perceptions of NEC
- NEC roadmap
- Interoperability (interagency, cross-government and multi-nationally)
- Acquisition, management and upgrade of equipment
- Implications of Defence Industrial Strategy, Enabling Acquisition Change & Defence Technology Strategy white papers for the C4ISTAR sector
Other areas of interest include: unmanned/autonomous military systems, the military use of space, surveillance systems and directed energy systems
These topics and others are investigated through research papers, articles and meetings culminating in the annual autumn RUSI C4ISTAR Conference, which is supported by the Ministry of Defence.
