Examining Qatari-Saudi Relations

German newspaper Die Welt recently reported that a meeting between Gulf states, chaired by Saudi Arabia, to discuss what should be done to counter increasing Hizbullah activity excluded Qatar from the discussions. The clear implication was that Saudi Arabia’s elite are reluctant to trust their Qatari counterparts in relation to sectarian issues. However, this should not necessarily come as a surprise; despite a recent rapprochement, Qatar and Saudi Arabia share long-standing points of contention that could potentially be exacerbated by those very sectarian concerns. Another strand of tension affecting one of the more active and stable countries in a region already shot through with concerns would not be a welcome development for anyone
