The Fascination of Betrayal

The current obsession with a supposed ‘right to know’ puts those engaged in difficult and dangerous work at risk. Accountability is not the significant factor in this argument, but rather trust and betrayal, two sides of a coin called ‘espionage’ and the basis for our fascination with this secretive world. The extraordinary popularity of films such as John Le Carré’s Tinker, Tailor, Soldier, Spy, not only questions society’s supposed desire for accountability but an instinctive fascination with secrecy, trust and betrayal.
