In this winning submission to the annual Trench Gascoigne Essay Competition, David Blagden assesses the fundamental assumptions in the current defence debate, arguing that the case has not yet been made in favour of an insurgency-based future. Despite the prospect of wide-ranging budgetary cuts, Blagden contends that Britain needs to retain a balanced range of capabilities in order to hedge against the range of possible threats; and that this must be done through the lens of grand strategy, not the crystal ball.
