The United States Aerospace Industry

By Keith Hayward
18 Jun 2004

This Whitehall Paper is an examination of the problems facing the US aerospace industry—an industry which has dominated world markets since the Second World War and whose technological and industrial power has helped to underpin Western defence capabilities. It examines the effects of changes in the domestic and international environment which together are creating a crisis in the US aerospace industry. This includes an assessment of the impact of procurement reform, shrinking defence budgets and increasing international competition on the US aerospace industry. The study suggests that while international joint ventures could be a solution to American industrial problems, serious political and institutional barriers will obstruct the growth of effective international collaboration involving US companies.
