NATO's Mlitary in the Age of Crisis Management

The Alliance has become a tool of crisis management, but its core role remains a more subtle variation on that which it was set up to perform. While its capacity to project force will remain potentially hostage to all manner of variables, NATO’s ability to defend home territory is the basic condition of its own existence. As this territory is extended eastwards, the prime challenge for NATO’s military arm must be to accommodate new allies without undermining its collective strengths.
