CJTF - A Lifeline for a European Defence Policy?
By Edward Foster and Gordon Wilson (editors)18 Jun 2004
This Whitehall Paper brings together papers given at a conference jointly organised by RUSI and the WEU Institute for Security Studies and held at the WEU Institute in Paris in April 1997.
The title chosen for the seminar appropriately conveys the gist of what has become the most topical issue in European security politics. Devised after the end of the Cold War, the Combined Joint Task Force (CJFT) concept is not only about the mechanics of NATO’s operational reform. It is also, fundamentally, about maintaining the meaning of the transatlantic link in the new international circumstances. Increasing NATO’s effectiveness implies improving its flexibility; this, in turn, requires more committed and diversified European contributions.
