A New League of Democracies?

By Laura Bridge
20 Jun 2008

Senator John McCain’s proposal for a ‘League of Democracies’ is a public relations masterpiece combining key issues such as multilateralism, the enhancement of liberal democracies, the promise of swift action in the face of humanitarian disaster and the projection of American interests. The idea has cross-party appeal in the US, yet there is concern within the international community that this latest proposal would undermine existing multilateral mechanisms and create new tensions with authoritarian powers such as China and Russia. A willingness to engage is necessary to remedy the current US credibility deficit, yet this particular form of reconstituted democratic institutionalism is ill-advised.
