In 2005, the US for the first time since the end of the Cold War reduced its troop levels in the Republic of Korea. To a degree, this was due to US military overstretch in Iraq. However, the re-alignment is also telling of a more significant change in US military regional strategy in Northeast Asia, aimed at countering a resurgent China as well as the North Korean threat.
