Mumbai Attacks: Implications for Militancy in South Asia

The bomb attacks of 11 July 2006 on commuter trains in Mumbai are the third in a series of assaults on the city since 1993, and in some senses, the most frightening. Although it is still too early to determine the perpetrators of the atrocities, there are two aspects of the bombings that are clear even without knowing the identity of the perpetrators: namely, its style and a lack of an obvious trigger event. The bomb blasts have serious implications for Pakistan, especially when combined with the grenade attack on tourists in Srinagar that happened earlier that same day.
