Abe’s sudden resignation announcement came as a complete surprise. And it comes at a critical time: the loss of the Upper House by the Liberal Democratic Party to the opposition party the Democratic Party of Japan has been accompanied by a foreign policy challenge concerning the Maritime Interdiction Operation and the Japanese Maritime Self Defence Force vessels operating in the Indian Ocean. But fears that Japan will again play a militaristic and negative role in world affairs are misplaced and outdated. Modern Japan is deeply imbibed with democratic and human rights values and it has the capacity to be a responsible player both regionally and globally.
