Personal Protection Equipment (PPE) is worn because either survival is unlikely without it (CBRN response/ fire fighting) or to fulfil a legal requirement (safety helmets/ steel toecaps). Whatever the reason for its use, observes Nikki Heath, PPE is a requirement in an increasing range of work environments, so its impact on performance must be carefully considered.
