There is a difference between knowing about something - through what is sometimes referred to as book learning - and exercising that knowledge through training. Training implies an element of active participation on the part of the trainee. This distinction is perhaps why the national curriculum, as applied in British schools, actively encourages sex education but draws the line at sex training. In other arenas however, a hands-on element is considered essential. Adrian Dwyer examines how training for one high-consequence scenario, an incident involving a weapon of mass effect, can be enhanced through the use of a Chemical Agent Monitor (CAM) simulator.
