The application of a wide range of security measures is essential if sometimes unwelcome to society. Manned security for the most part consists of mundane and routine tasks that only have a positive conclusion when an attempt to breach security has been successfully defeated. The mitigation of what is most usually an invisible risk, through often-monotonous activities provides an opportunity for individuals to display a wide range of patterns of human behaviour. Nikki Heath gives a sobering view of the potential pitfalls and reasons for the failure of security measures. They are partly psychological and partly organizational.
