Suicide attackers present us with one of the most formidably destructive and complex threats. The focus of global attention has been on Islamic suicide bombers linked to Al Qa'ida, but this tactic has been used by other movements for decades. Mariyam Hasham suggests that the experience and record of the Tamil fighters in Sri Lanka in using suicide attacks can help us to understand the rituals - as well as discipline - required to motivate suicide bombers.
