Most writings on countering insurgencies are written on behalf of those attempting to do just that. Seldom have the insurgents – or in this case, former insurgents – used the opportunity to write about the strategy and tactics pursued by their opponents. If they did, they might be able to help answer a key question confounding militaries, governments and development agencies from Afghanistan to the Sudan: What can be done better to defeat insurgencies and enable peace?
