Jun 2008, Vol. 153, No. 3By John MackinlayArtists are drawn to conflict for different reasons; some are commissioned by the
rich and powerful to convey a particular message and some go as illustrators to
describe what they see in more neutral terms. In both cases they tend to be
challenged by the nature of twenty-first century conflict, which lacks the drama
and cinematic qualities of earlier warfare when men fought in a furious mass and
the spectacle of their fighting, moving or waiting in large numbers with their
colours and stylish uniforms providing obvious subjects.
