The Struggles for Zimbabwe, South Africa and SADC: Liberation War 'Theology' and Post-Nationalism

Jun 2008, Vol. 153, No. 3
By Knox Chityo

Zimbabwe’s post-2000 crisis continues to attract global interest and concern, with most of the discourse focused on the clash between Robert Mugabe and Morgan Tsvangirai, and their respective parties, ZANU-PF and the Movement for Democratic Change (MDC). The focus is quite rightly on the here and now; specifically, the way(s) in which Robert Mugabe and his inner circle can be persuaded to exit the political landscape, or at least cede significant political power. This article examines the ‘war of ideas’ within Zimbabwe, between Zimbabwe and South Africa and within the region. Underpinning this is the fundamental thesis that Zimbabwe represents a crucible for the clash between liberation war ‘theology’ and post-nationalism as the ideological engines of development and security.
