Chaos ruled in Iraq in the aftermath of the invasion. And yet despite the bloody mess, there has been some improvement in conditions in the country and there has been some reconciliation between the warring communities. On the part of the West, understanding that the essence of conflict in Iraq is a struggle between different communities for power and resources has bee crucial in shaping the way it approaches the Iraqi people, the government an armed groups. It has made it focus more on the role that the Coalition can play in helping to ensure that this struggle takes place as nonviolently as possible.
