Multiculturalism after 7/7: A Scapegoat or a Hope for the Future

Apr 2008, Vol. 153, No. 2
By Tariq Madood

In the February 2008 issue of the RUSI Journal, Gwyn Prins and Robert Salisbury articulated the consensus of a high ranking seminar which suggested that ‘flabby and bogus strategic thinking’ is a fundamental source of danger to the security of the United Kingdom.

For Madood, this thesis is implausible, at the very least exaggerated. Firstly, it suffers from a lack of evidence. It is astonishing how the general thesis ‘multiculturalism is dead and was killed by 9/11 and/or 7/7’ has become part of the accepted common sense without any reference to the work of any key multiculturalist theorist or text.
