Aug 2006, Vol. 151, No. 4By David RichardsNATO is pioneering the Transformation agenda, where much progress has been made and where the strength, diverse capabilities, and flexibility inherent in multinational operations are being proved. However, Afghanistan is a dangerous country requiring a complete fusion of approaches, from fully kinetic operations to 'hearts and minds'. The omens though for NATO's future look good since the majority of nations have recognized the requirement for the removal of caveats and in general, NATO is held in high regard in Afghanistan. But NATO must deliver on expectations and that will require continuing improvement, or Transformation, across the board - for this is where NATO will be judged in the final analysis. NATO cannot afford not to succeed. Although the magnitude of the challenge may, at times, appear overwhelming, there is no doubt that NATO can and must succeed, not just for the sake of Afghanistan, to whom the free world owes so much, but also for our own nations' sakes. Afghanistan is the front line against terror.
