Aug 2005, Vol. 150, No. 4By Nigel SaleThe Battle of Waterloo has aroused much passion – and even more controversy – among both participants and historians alike. Ever since the battle, the question as to who actually achieved the coup de grâce of Napoleon’s hopes at Waterloo has been disputed, often acrimoniously. Who finally routed his attack by the Garde Impériale? Was it the British Foot Guards, as many believe, or was it a mixture of Dutch gunners, the Guards and a British light infantry regiment, the 52nd of Foot? Or should the victory be attributed to the 52nd alone?
