Aug 2008, Vol. 153, No. 4By Paul SmythAs security forces supporting the Government of Afghanistan (GoA) continue to advance into Provincial areas that were once under insurgent control, Afghan insurgents are steadily being evicted from their havens within the country. Their reliance on supporters in the contiguous Federally Administered Tribal Areas (FATA) and North-West Frontier Province (NWFP) is growing accordingly, as does their ability to safely transit to them. With this movement of insurgents, the significance of the border area is indubitably set to increase, as is the vulnerability of friendly forces to enemy raiding from within Pakistan.
