Dec 2007, Vol. 152, No. 6By Ayesha SiddiqaTraditionally, analysis of military economy is restricted to defence budgets which comprise expenditure on procurement, personnel and operations. Defining the military economy in terms of the official defence budget unfortunately limits the debate and does not allow for a complete view of the net national resources absorbed by the armed forces or the security sector. This article aims to reconceptualize military economy and discuss how the expansion of military capital beyond what is traditionally defined as military expenditure empowers the security sector. In less democratic societies, this economy results in the military’s more pervasive control of the state, society and economy.
