Logistics of the American Civil War

Oct 2007, Vol. 152, No. 5
By David Kirkpatrick

This paper briefly reviews the origins and the course of the war, and then considers the challenges which it presented in the supply and transport of troops, using the alternative modes of transport available in that period. It then considers the influence of logistics on the operations of Union and Confederate forces. Finally the paper shows how some of the logistical features of the ACW are reflected in later wars. The paper highlights the enduring importance of logistics, and the scale of the logistic support required by modern military forces. It argues, in conclusion, that future decisions on the acquisition of new combat equipment should take explicit account of the logistical resources required for its deployment and support.
