The wide variety of coastguard work, including as it does emergency towing, general policing, fishery control and inspection, search and rescue, and pollution prevention and control, demands a flexible approach to ship design. Depending on the driving factors in each case, an existing hull design may be selected as a starting point, or an entirely new design developed.
Virtually all the main systems and equipment such as engines, propulsion systems, deck machinery, control and automation are then engineered into it, reducing the risk for both shipowner and shipyard.
