The Maritime Trade Dynamic: Reshaping the US Coast Guard Role

By Robbin Laird
3 Mar 2008

The USCG is facing pressures to move in two very different directions to alternative futures. One direction is to be a key participant in a global maritime trade safety and security system. The core US role in the trading system would provide the USCG with the opportunity to lead in shaping a global C4ISR system and CONOPS approach, which could shape shared decision-making among global stakeholders. The modernisation of USCG assets would be shaped by an integrated approach linking its assets into a maritime security enterprise.

The other direction would circumscribe its role towards a more inward responsibility providing safety and security for ports, inland waterways and related tasks. Either way, more than missions are not going to be met. A choice needs to be made.
