There is no question that agile air mobility will be critical to the military operations foreseen for the future, because of its role in deploying and sustaining forces without having to depend on surface transportation, improved airfields or ports. The military effects of agile air mobility include speed, surprise and manoeuvrability for ground forces; relief from the need to defend extended surface supply lines; and the benefit of keeping personnel and equipment out of harm’s way.
