Cannons, Missiles and Mortars: Cost-Effectiveness of Precision

By Alan Moore
3 Mar 2008

A comparative assessment of force structure, cost of engagement and battlefield utility between precision cannon artillery and precision rocket artillery would indicate that precision rocket artillery now has the demonstrated capability to provide in-depth, first-round effects over wide areas of the theatre of operations with reduced force structure, and given a detailed assessment, lower procurement and operations and support cost. The deployment of GMLRS rockets coupled with the 120mm or 122mm guided mortar would provide the deployed forces with in-depth, timely, accurate, lethal and affordable fire support, without having to rely on other expensive platforms.
