Pakistan’s Relations with the US: Risks and Opportunities

The United States and Pakistan will have to work hard to stop their alliance from souring after an air attack by US-led forces killed eleven Pakistani soldiers at a border post earlier this month. The latest regrettable incident is only one in a rocky relationship, which has had its ups and downs since Pakistan’s independence. Both the US and Pakistan need to work harder to boost their relationship. This is not just a matter of improving the tone of debate but, rather, of addressing the real and perceived grievances of ordinary Pakistanis, and making sure that the strategic link is seen as being genuinely profitable for both sides, rather than, ultimately, just for the US.
